It is essential to memorize Biblical Greek vocabulary to develop impeccable reading skills in the Greek New Testament. Even if you deeply understand Greek syntax and morphology, it is easier to quickly read through the New Testament if you know the meaning of every word. And if you think that using Bible software or Greek lexicon will be a great help, you must understand that it is indeed a time-consuming process.

Here’s a piece of advice. You can enjoy reading and studying Biblical Greek online if you spend time upfront memorizing the vocab. You can learn the vocab words after getting down the basics of speech.

Begin with Frequently Used Words

Among the 138,607 words in the New Testament Greek, around 5,394 are unique words. Most of these unique words occur a few times, while others occur hundreds of times.

A great way to memorize vocabulary is to start with the most frequently used words first and then move to less frequently used words. Ultimately, you can recognize enough words to understand the meaning of the remaining based on the context.

Try to memorize words that occur at least ten times out of 1,126 words to be competent at reading. A good way is repeating a word 25 times. It is more than you do in Biblical Greek classes for beginners. But it helps in developing a basic foundation.

Gradually, you can increase your proficiency by memorizing every word five times, including around 965 of all words occurring in the New Testament. This way, you can infer the meaning of numerous unknown words.

Review the Vocabulary Words Daily

Try to learn new words every week while regularly maintaining previously memorized words. An achievable goal is 25 words every week. If possible, try to practice 50 words in a week. It is ten words per day with a weekend break for review.
